Any home visit is agreed with you afterwards.

Working on movement after surgery at home.
From your exercise plan
to everyday life
An exercise sheet is useful. Once you’re home, though, it can leave you with questions. We check how you’re managing and help you work towards the things you want to do again.
Moving after a joint replacement
After a hip or knee replacement, we assess how you’re moving and go through the exercises you’ve been given. The operation you had and any precautions shape the work.
Getting about with a walking aid
We watch how you get on with your current aid in your own rooms. If we suggest changing it, that advice takes account of your walking and any weight-bearing instructions from the hospital.
Practising everyday tasks
Standing from your usual chair or negotiating a step can feel different after surgery. Where appropriate, we practise the movements you need in the setting where you will use them.
Reviewing progress without rushing
We talk through what’s getting easier and what’s still hard. Your programme can change as you recover. It stays within the advice and restrictions your surgical team has set.

“The home visit was super helpful because one of my issues was due to the fact I had the saddle too high on my exercise bike. Had I visited a clinic, this would not have been picked up as easily.”
Rehabilitation that fits
your operation
We offer post-operative rehabilitation, including after joint replacement. Tell us which procedure you have had so we can discuss whether our service is suitable.
- You’re recovering at home after a hip or knee replacement.
- You’d like help understanding or doing your prescribed exercises.
- Getting up, or walking around your home, is still difficult.
- You’d like someone to review your progress since surgery.
Operations differ, and so do recovery plans. Before we agree any treatment, we need to know about your procedure and any restrictions. If you’ve had a different type of surgery, ask us about suitability first.
Working with
your surgical advice
Review the information from hospital
We ask about your operation, your symptoms now and what you want to get back to. Keep your discharge summary and exercise instructions to hand. That includes any limits on movement, or on how much weight you can put through a limb.
Assess where you are now
We look at the movements that matter for your recovery, and at how you’re managing at home. That tells us what support you need and which activities are right to practise.
Explain and adapt your programme
We check how you do your exercises and agree any changes within your surgical guidance. You’ll have time to ask about the plan and what to do between visits.
Check progress at follow-up
We review your movement and everyday tasks, then talk about next steps. If something needs clarifying with your surgical team, we’ll tell you. We won’t push past the advice you’ve been given.

for a relative
If you are helping someone after an operation, you can enquire on their behalf. Let us know the procedure and what they would like help with. With their agreement, you can attend a visit and discuss how to support the plan at home.
The person having treatment stays involved in decisions about their care. With their agreement, family or carers can join the conversation and talk about how to support the plan between visits. Updates are shared with consent.

Questions about physiotherapy after surgery
Still have a question?
Ask us by email.
Can I enquire before my operation?
Yes. Tell us the planned procedure and date so we can discuss possible home visits. We agree the timing around your surgical advice and how you are recovering, subject to availability.
Do you offer physiotherapy after hip and knee replacement?
Yes, we offer joint replacement rehabilitation. Before we agree a plan, we look at your circumstances and the hospital’s instructions.
When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
Follow the plan given by your hospital team. Contact us to discuss how home visits might fit with it. There is no single start date that is right for every operation or every patient.
Should I keep doing the hospital exercises?
Keep following the instructions you were given, and bring the exercise sheet to your assessment. If you’re unsure about an exercise, or your symptoms have changed, ask your treating team. We can go through the programme with you during a visit.
Can you tell me when I can stop using crutches or drive?
We can assess your walking and talk about aids within your weight-bearing instructions. Driving is separate. It depends on your surgical team’s advice and on what your insurer requires. And a physiotherapy appointment isn’t automatic clearance to drive.
What if I am worried about pain or my wound?
For new or worsening symptoms, wound concerns or anything that doesn’t feel right, use the contact instructions your surgical team gave you. If you need urgent medical help, get it. Don’t wait for a routine physiotherapy visit.
