More confidence
in everyday movement

Maybe you've started avoiding the front step, or you hold on to furniture as you walk. We start with the situations that worry you. Then we agree goals you can work towards at home.

Getting up and changing direction

We can look at rising from your usual chair, turning in a small room and moving between seats. Practising in your own space keeps the work tied to your actual day.

Strength and balance at your level

An exercise programme starts with what you can manage. We adjust the difficulty and support as you progress. And we leave time to check you know what to practise between visits.

Walking indoors and outside

Your goal might be reaching the bathroom more confidently, or getting out to the garden. We can review how you walk and any walking aid you already use.

Looking at your surroundings

The assessment can include practical things, like a low chair or a trip hazard on a route you use often. We talk through possible changes with you. It's your home, and how you like to use it matters.

“The home visit was super helpful because one of my issues was due to the fact I had the saddle too high on my exercise bike. Had I visited a clinic, this would not have been picked up as easily.”

After a fall,
or before the first one

You can ask for help if you've become less steady, even if you haven't fallen. Physiotherapy may be one part of the support you need.

  • You have had a fall or several near misses.
  • Turning, getting up or stepping outside feels less secure.
  • You have started avoiding activities because you worry about falling.
  • You would like advice about walking or using a mobility aid.

Falls can have several causes. We assess movement and discuss whether you also need support from your GP or another professional. Physiotherapy cannot guarantee that you will not fall.

What we look at
during a home visit

  1. Hear what has happened

We ask about any falls or near misses, your health, and anything you've become wary of doing. If you've already had an injury looked at, or had a medical assessment, tell us.

  2. Assess movement and balance

We look at relevant movements, such as standing up and walking, with suitable support. That shows us where things are difficult. It also gives us a sensible place to start.

  3. Agree a plan for practice

Your plan may include strength and balance exercises alongside practice of everyday tasks. We explain how to work on them at home, and how much support you'll need.

  4. Review and adjust

Follow-up visits are a chance to talk about what's easier and what still worries you. We review the exercises. Then we agree together whether more visits would be useful.

Arranging support
for a relative

If you are concerned about a relative after a fall, you can make the first enquiry. Tell us what has changed and whether they have already had a medical assessment. We will discuss whether a home physiotherapy visit may be appropriate.

The person having treatment stays involved in decisions about their care. With their agreement, family or carers can join the conversation and talk about how to support the plan between visits. Updates are shared with consent.

Questions about falls and balance

Still have a question?
Ask us by email.

Do I need to have fallen before asking for help?

No. A near miss, growing unsteadiness, or avoiding things because you're afraid of falling can all be reasons to discuss an assessment. You don't need to wait for an injury.

Can physiotherapy prevent another fall?

No treatment can promise that. Physiotherapy works on the movement and balance difficulties that may add to your risk. Some people also need a wider assessment through their GP or falls service.

What if I feel dizzy as well as unsteady?

Tell us when you enquire. Dizziness has several possible causes and may need medical assessment. Vestibular rehabilitation is a separate service for some inner-ear balance problems. It isn't the right treatment for everyone who feels unsteady.

Should I start balance exercises before the visit?

There's no need to try unfamiliar balance exercises beforehand. We'll assess which movements are appropriate and what support you need. Keep following any advice your treating clinician has already given you.

Can a relative or carer attend?

Yes, if you'd like them there. They can tell us what they've noticed and ask how to support the plan. You stay involved in decisions about your treatment.

What should I do after a recent fall?

If you might be injured or feel unwell, get medical advice. Don't wait for a physiotherapy enquiry. A routine home visit is not an emergency response. Once any immediate concerns have been assessed, we can talk about rehabilitation.
